How to predict the exact score of a football match

Getting the exact score right is every predictor's dream. Nobody nails it every time, but a few simple habits clearly improve your chances.

1. Check the recent form of both teams

The last 5 matches often say more than the league table. A team on a winning run usually scores more, and a team in crisis often concedes. On Daily Score, the form is shown right under each team with green, grey and red dots.

2. Think about the most common scores

In the big leagues, the most frequent scores are 1-1, 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0. High-scoring games (4-3, 5-0) happen, but they are rare. When in doubt, a tight score is usually the sensible pick.

3. Don't forget the draw

People tend to overlook draws, yet they happen in roughly one match out of four. Between two evenly matched teams, or in a high-stakes game where nobody wants to lose, 1-1 or 0-0 are serious options.

4. Study the head to head

Some fixtures look alike from one season to the next: a team that always frustrates a stronger opponent, or games that are usually full of goals. Recent meetings give useful clues.

5. Remember home advantage

Playing at home is still a real advantage: home teams win more often and score slightly more on average. It is not an absolute rule, but it is a good starting point.

6. Look at the context

A midweek Champions League game, a derby, a team already qualified or fighting relegation: the context changes the intensity of a match, and so its likely score.

7. Keep the right result in mind

Even when you miss the exact score, getting the winner (or the draw) right still earns points. On Daily Score, an exact score is worth 3 points and the right result 1 point: consistent picks pay off over time.
